How to Properly Store and Serve Natural Spring Water
How to Properly Store and Serve Natural Spring Water
How to keep it cold, fresh, and good-tasting for the entire two weeks — and how to serve it so guests notice.
Spring water isn't like bottled water. It doesn't sit on a shelf for months. It doesn't have preservatives, UV sterilization, or reverse osmosis to extend its shelf life indefinitely. The trade-off is that the water is alive — mineral-balanced, oxygenated, exactly as it came out of the ground — but it rewards the same care you give produce.
Three things matter: temperature, container, and rotation. Get those right and the water stays fresh for two full weeks. Get them wrong and it goes flat, picks up off-flavors, or grows biofilm.
The Four Things That Matter
Keep it cold
Spring water stays fresh longest at refrigerator temperatures — 35-40°F. Cold suppresses microbial growth and keeps the dissolved oxygen stable. At room temperature, you'll want to finish a jug within 5-7 days. In a fridge or climate-controlled cold box, the full 14 days between deliveries is no problem. The jugs arrive cold for a reason.
Keep it in glass
Glass is the only material that's truly inert. Stainless is acceptable for short-term transfer. Plastic — even BPA-free — leaches microplastics faster in warmer water and imparts a faint taste over time. The reason we deliver in glass is the same reason you store in glass: nothing else keeps the water exactly as it left the spring.
Rotate, don't refill
If you're decanting into a smaller dispenser for the counter, change the water every 2-3 days and clean the dispenser weekly. Spigots and narrow-necks are the spot biofilm forms first. A weekly rinse with warm water and a drop of unscented dish soap, followed by a cold rinse, is all you need. No bleach. No harsh cleaners.
Keep it dark
Keep the jug out of direct sunlight, away from the stove, away from any heat source. Sunlight and warmth grow algae in weeks — even in glass. The jug goes in a pantry, a closet, a corner of the kitchen that's away from the window. If you have to choose between a sunny counter with a view and a cool pantry in the back, choose the pantry.
The Ideal Storage Setup
One dispenser on the counter. A 2.5 gallon glass dispenser with a stainless spigot goes in the spot everyone gathers. It stays at counter temperature but stays cold if you're using a steel shelf with a chill pack underneath, or if your kitchen is naturally cool.
The rest of the jugs stay in the fridge or a cold pantry. Most deliveries bring 4-12 jugs. One goes on the dispenser. The rest stay cold and untouched until the dispenser empties. This rotation gives you 14 days of fresh, cold water without any jug ever sitting at room temperature for more than a few days.
The empty jug goes back to the truck. Don't wash and reuse the jug for anything else. The glass is calibrated for the spring's pressure-fill system, and contamination or residue from other uses affects the seal at the source. Leave the empties by the door on delivery day. We take care of the rest.
How much you actually need on hand
How to Serve It Well
The cup matters. Spring water in a 16 ounce glass cup feels different than spring water in a plastic tumbler. The cup signals care. Glass or ceramic, with weight in the hand, is the right call. The mouthfeel is cleaner, the cold lasts longer, and the visual is more appealing.
Pour at the table, not in the kitchen. If you have a glass dispenser on the dining table or kitchen island, guests serve themselves. This is both more hospitable and less work for you. The dispenser becomes a centerpiece, not a utility.
Pour over ice for the cocktail crowd, neat for the wine crowd. Both work. Spring water has enough mineral body to stand on its own without dilution. Ice dilutes — for guests who want full flavor, no ice. For guests who want cold, plenty of ice. Provide both.
If you're hosting, decant into smaller bottles for the table. A 2.5 gallon dispenser is great for daily use; for a dinner party, decant into 1 liter glass bottles and place them around the table. Each guest has their own. It's elegant, it's generous, and it makes the water feel intentional.
