What's the Healthiest Choice for Drinking Water? A No-Nonsense Guide
What's the Healthiest Choice for Drinking Water?
Spring, purified, distilled, alkaline, mineral, filtered, raw. Here's what the labels actually mean — and what your body needs from water.
Walk into any grocery store and you'll see 30+ brands of bottled water, each claiming to be the healthiest. "Spring." "Purified." "Distilled." "Alkaline." "Mineral." "Filtered." "Raw." "Structured." "Artesian." "Hydrogen-infused." The marketing has gotten louder than the science.
Let's strip away the labels and talk about what actually matters when you choose drinking water.
Three Things to Look For in Any Drinking Water
1. Minimal Processing
Water that has been over-processed has lost something essential. Minerals are stripped during distillation and reverse osmosis. Microbial life is killed. The "structure" of the water — how molecules organize themselves — is disrupted. The healthy choice is water that came out of the earth in a form already suitable for drinking and has been left alone since. Real spring water from a protected source is the canonical example.
2. A Natural Mineral Balance
Calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and silica in natural balance are essential for hydration, nerve function, bone health, and skin elasticity. Many "purified" or "distilled" waters have had these minerals stripped during treatment and never put back. When they are re-added — as in some bottled mineral waters — the ratios are often artificial. The healthiest choice is water that picked up its minerals naturally, on its way through rock and sediment, in proportions the human body has recognized for millions of years.
3. Verified Purity, Not Just Filtered Purity
PFAS, microplastics, glyphosate, heavy metals, VOCs, and radioactive isotopes are the contaminants of modern water. The healthiest choice is a water source where these are absent — not because a filter removed them, but because the water never encountered them in the first place. Springs that emerge from volcanic aquifers or limestone bedrock, far from industrial or agricultural runoff, are the gold standard. They should publish annual third-party lab reports testing for the full panel.
How Common Drinking Waters Stack Up
Spring water (real, from a named source): The gold standard. Natural mineral balance, untouched by treatment chemicals, packaged in glass or food-grade containers. Lab reports verify purity. This is what your body was designed to drink.
Municipal tap water: Treated to be safe (chlorine, sometimes fluoride added) but typically contains microplastics, traces of PFAS in many regions, and the residual taste of treatment chemicals. Mineral content varies wildly by region. Safe, but not the healthiest choice.
Filtered tap water (pitcher filter, under-sink RO): Better than unfiltered tap, but most pitcher filters don't remove PFAS or microplastics. Reverse osmosis removes nearly everything — including the beneficial minerals — leaving water that's "pure" but lifeless.
Distilled water: Pure in a chemistry sense, but stripped of all minerals. Drinking large amounts long-term can leach minerals from your body. Not recommended as your primary drinking water.
Alkaline water (ionizer or "alkaline spring water"): The "alkaline" claim is mostly marketing. The pH of your water has minimal impact on your body's pH (your kidneys and lungs regulate that tightly). What matters more is the mineral content — and many alkaline waters are simply purified water with minerals added back.
Mineral water (commercial brands): Often genuine spring water with published mineral profiles. Quality varies dramatically by source. Check the label — if it doesn't name the source, be skeptical.
Fiji, Evian, Voss, and the "premium" imports: Real spring water, often from genuinely pristine sources. But they ship thousands of miles in plastic bottles, which adds microplastics and a massive carbon footprint. If you can find a local spring water delivery service, the quality is usually comparable and the sustainability is far better.
