Why glass-jug refill-and-return beats every other water delivery model on emissions, microplastic pollution, and packaging waste — with the numbers to prove it.
Sustainable water delivery sounds like marketing. Most bottled water brands use the word 'sustainable' on their packaging while shipping single-use plastic across oceans. The actual sustainability story for water is harder than it looks: water is heavy, packaging is usually disposable, and most 'eco-friendly' options are barely better than the thing they're replacing.
Glass-jug refill-and-return is the exception. It's not a small improvement on the bottled water model — it's a different model entirely. The math gets compelling fast.
Where Refill-and-Return Wins
Plastic waste prevented
A single 2.5 gallon Italian glass jug makes 50+ delivery round trips before retirement. Each trip carries roughly 40 single-use bottles' worth of water. That's 2,000+ disposable bottles replaced per jug over its lifetime. Multiply by 4,200+ households on our service and the cumulative count passes 29 million bottles avoided — and growing every week.
Carbon footprint
The first delivery of any glass jug has high embedded carbon — the energy to manufacture it. After delivery #2, that cost is amortized across more water. By month six, the per-gallon carbon footprint of our refillable glass is lower than bottled water trucked across the country. By year one, it's roughly a third of single-use PET. The longer you stay on the service, the cleaner it gets.
Delivery efficiency
One refrigerated van making 60 stops replaces 60 separate car trips to the grocery store for bottled water. The diesel-per-gallon math is dramatically better when one truck serves a neighborhood than when each household makes its own round trip. We've measured this: our per-gallon delivery emissions are about 1/8th of the average consumer's bottled water procurement footprint.
End-of-life value
Glass is the only common packaging material that's infinitely recyclable without quality loss. A glass bottle recycled today becomes a glass bottle tomorrow, or a fiberglass insulation panel, or a glass countertop, or a new glass jug — with no downcycling. Every retired Alive Water jug returns to the glass cullet stream and becomes new glass within months.
Why Other Models Don't Get There
Single-use plastic bottles. 240,000 nanoplastic particles per liter on average. 9% recycling rate globally. Bottled water has a per-gallon carbon footprint 3-4x higher than municipal tap — even ignoring the plastic.
Reusable plastic jugs (5-gallon office water cooler style). Better than single-use, but the plastic still leaches, the jugs degrade visually after a few hundred cycles, and most office water coolers aren't local — they're trucked hundreds of miles. The polycarbonate clouding you see on a five-year-old water cooler jug is microplastic damage to the polymer itself.
Home filtration (RO, distillation, charcoal). Eliminates plastic but uses 3-5x more water than it produces (RO rejects most of what goes in), strips beneficial minerals along with contaminants, and the filters themselves become plastic waste every 6-12 months. Reverse osmosis water isn't spring water — it's stripped municipal water, mineral-depleted, and slightly acidic.
Aluminum-can water. Better than plastic in some ways (infinitely recyclable, no leaching) but the cans are single-use, the manufacturing emissions are significant, and there's no flavor advantage. Aluminum is the second-best option if glass is unavailable — but glass is available.

Carbon neutral today. Our bottling facility, delivery fleet, and offices are carbon-neutral through verified offsets. The glass manufacturing is the largest single emissions line item — and that's amortized across 50+ trips per jug.

What's next: lightweighting the jug. Our glass is already 30% lighter than the original Italian design from 2016. The next manufacturing iteration targets another 8-12% reduction. Each kilo we shave from the empty jug multiplies across 50+ trips.
What's next: regional micro-hubs. We currently deliver from regional bottling facilities in Oregon and Alabama. As we scale into new states, the goal is one micro-hub per major metro — cutting long-haul trucking from the equation entirely.
